Chapter 23

The following morning dawned cloudy and cool. Jon woke first, held in Talin’s arms, as usual. Enjoying the warmth of his husband’s body, he gently kissed the chest in front of him, then closed his eyes again to relax into being in that moment. He dozed for another thirty minutes until he felt Talin shift a little, signaling he was awake. Jon tightened his arms a little, then poked his nose into Talin’s shoulder.

Talin huffed out a sound, shifting away from his life mate. “I do not know why you persist in poking me with your nose, Jonathan. Were you a bird in another life that you must jab me with your beak to get my attention? Please tell me, my husband, before I begin wearing body armor to bed.”

Jon kissed the spot he’d poked, then licked it. “Does that soothe you, Talin? I didn’t mean to upset you – it was just me being…me. I don’t think I was a bird although I am a good pilot…hmm, never thought about that. Anyway, no body armor in bed. You’re already solid enough. I promise not to beak you again in the future, okay?”

Talin was quiet for a moment, then pulled Jon up so he was laying on him, his head just under Talin’s chin. “You did not upset me, husband. I did not mean to cause you concern. I know you are spontaneous in your behaviors far more than I, a trait that I love. Perhaps I am tired. I did not sleep well last night and today will be long.”

Jon tensed while hearing his husband’s explanation. “It was me again, wasn’t it? I don’t know – was I crying? I think I had a bad dream – I didn’t know I woke you. I’m sorry, Talin. I wouldn’t blame you if you want to sleep apart from me. I hope those referrals showed up – I don’t want to bother you every night with this crap. I’m serious. I could sleep on one of the couches.”

Talin ran his hands over Jon’s head and back, comforting him. “Yes, you woke me but my thoughts kept me from returning to sleep. That is nothing you can control. I do not wish to sleep apart, my husband. I do not care if you wake me – I wish to help you if I can as well as comfort you. I will be fine today, Jonathan. Do not worry as I know you are prone to do.”

Jon sighed. “I can’t help it, Talin. I hate this shit so much, and I hate that my problem causes problems for you. Guess this is part of ‘the worse’ in our vows. I promise I’ll get this worked out as soon as I can – it’s just going to suck until I do. I really am sorry, my heart.”

Talin rolled Jon over to lay on his back, leaning up to kiss him until Jon relaxed into the bed. “I trust you to care for me in all things, Jonathan.
